Information Networking

A ConesysContentCollector: The harvester module crawls out to retrieve data from various ConesysContentProvider s. The collected data is stored in a Conesys repository. Graphical user interfaces allow human-beings to access the aggregated content, which was formerly distributed on remote servers.

A ConesysContentCollector is simply the other side of the coin compared to a ConesysContentProvider. The collector can do two things to aggregate content from remote sources:

  1. Distributed Harvesting: Regularly gather data from other servers and store them on a local database upon which search is performed. This method allows faster searching and better control of network problems.

  2. Distributed Search: Issue the search request to each of the other content provision servers and show the result set they responded with. This way we get up-to-date results and avoid the latency of data cachying, but we have to live with the latency of the network.

Take for example companies who want to share content between branch offices. Therefore we set up a ConesysContentCollector that crawls out regularly to the backoffice servers and gathers information from those (who will ideally be implemented as ConesysContentProvider s). The collector may serve as a central information portal for company staff or customers. For these purposes, Conesys offers graphical user interfaces to search or administer the collector. User interfaces are available through existing software modules or in the future thirdparty software using ConesysConnector? s.

Installation is pretty much the same as for ConesysContentProvider s. All harvesting logic is encapsulated in the ConesysHarvester? module. Again, several connectors are available which allow interoperability and easy access, for example to build graphical user interfaces or application programming interfaces.

Different kinds of content network topologies can be build with Conesys, depending on the information policy of an organisation as well as technical aspects. Topologies can range from central, ring, hierarchical, decentral/peer-to-peer, to hybrid network architectures. The ConesysHarvester? module is automagically configured. The parameters defined in XML description files are distributed between ConesysContentCollector s similar to the DNS system. Hence, Conesys content network systems allow for scalable and adaptive content and knowledge infrastructures.
