There are several ways how to get PEAR::OAI running on your server (see below). All of them have the same system requirements.
System Requirements
- PHP >= 4.2.0
Depending on which PearOaiBackend you use, some additional software might be necessary to have a OAI server or client working on your system.
Instant PEAR::OAI
The easiest way to install PEAR::OAI is to download the "Instant PEAR::OAI" package.

PEAR Package Manager
A flexible way to install PEAR::OAI is to grab the 
PEAR Package Manager. Please consider that you need root access on your server if you use the package manager.
Once you have the package manager running on your system, you must first install the packages that PEAR::OAI depends on. These packages are
- PEAR >= 1.1
- HTTP_Header >= 0.1.3
- HTTP_Session >= 0.4
- HTML_Template_IT >= 1.1
To resolve the dependencies, do
shell> pear install PEAR shell> pear install HTTP_Header shell> pear install HTTP_Session shell> pear install HTML_Template_IT
After that, download the latest OAI-x.x.x.tgz and install the package with
shell> pear install /path/to/OAI-x.x.x.tgz
This will only install the OAI protocol layer, what is missing is the installation of at least one PearOaiBackend plugin that actually returns OAI metadata (running an OAI service provider aka server) from your database or writes it to the database (running an OAI harvester aka client). So please procede with installation of a suitable PearOaiBackend.
ZZ/OSS Installer
PEAR::OAI can also be installed with the ZzossInstaller.
